A steady, well-balanced water pressure is essential for your faucets, showers, and appliances to work properly. Too little pressure can make showers weak and washing machines slow to fill, while too much pressure can strain pipes and fixtures. The good news is that you can easily measure and evaluate your home’s water pressure with a few simple tools—and take action if something isn’t right.
What’s Normal Water Pressure?
In most U.S. homes, normal water pressure ranges between 40 and 60 psi (pounds per square inch). This level provides a strong, consistent flow without putting unnecessary stress on your plumbing system.
- Below 40 psi: You may notice weak flow from faucets and showers.
- Above 80 psi: The pressure is too high and can damage pipes, valves, and appliances over time.
If you live in a multi-story home, pressure may vary between floors. Homes with private wells often have a pressure tank and switch that control the pressure range, typically between 40 and 60 psi.
How to Measure Water Pressure
You can check your home’s water pressure in a couple of easy ways—either with a pressure gauge or a simple flow test.
1. Use a Pressure Gauge
The most accurate method is to use a water pressure gauge, which measures pressure directly in psi. Here’s how:
- Turn off all faucets and water-using appliances.
- Screw the gauge onto an outdoor spigot or a laundry faucet.
- Turn on the water fully and read the pressure on the dial.
You can find inexpensive gauges at hardware stores or online. Some even have a “lazy hand” that records the highest pressure reached, which is useful for spotting fluctuations.
2. Try a Simple Bucket Test
If you don’t have a gauge, you can get a rough idea of your water pressure using a bucket and a timer:
- Use a bucket with a known volume, such as 5 gallons.
- Turn on a faucet fully and time how long it takes to fill the bucket.
- If it fills in about 30 seconds, your pressure is likely around 50–60 psi—within the normal range.
This method isn’t precise, but it can help you identify if your pressure is unusually low.
Signs of Low or High Water Pressure
Low Pressure
- Weak flow from faucets or showerheads.
- Appliances like dishwashers or washing machines take longer to fill.
- Pressure drops when multiple fixtures are used at once.
Possible causes include mineral buildup in pipes, a faulty pressure regulator, or issues with the municipal supply or well pump.
High Pressure
- Water sprays forcefully when you open a faucet.
- You hear banging or whistling noises in the pipes (known as “water hammer”).
- Leaky faucets, running toilets, or frequent appliance failures.
A pressure-reducing valve (PRV) can help stabilize high pressure and protect your plumbing system.
How to Adjust Water Pressure
If your home has a PRV—usually located near where the main water line enters the house—you can adjust it yourself:
- Attach a pressure gauge to a nearby faucet to monitor changes.
- Loosen the lock nut on the PRV.
- Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease it.
- Make small adjustments and recheck the pressure after each turn.
If you’re on a private well, you can adjust the pressure switch on the well pump system, but it’s best to consult your well service technician before making changes.
